I didn’t have a career in mind, but I knew that any career “worth wanting” (I’m carefully using quotations here) required me to go to college. What I learned was that the intellectual, social, spiritual, and various other challenges (healthy, unhealthy, and everything in between) may be the best reasons to go to college. and meet completely new people, test their ideas, experience a freedom in time and ideas, make mistakes, and lead/work in ways that, in my opinion, are only available at colleges. My argument often catches their attention when it comes down to basic salary numbers though…and they easily trump my argument when they see that I went to a very expensive college, but am making a salary similar to one that they could with just a high school diploma.
